How eBay Canada Fees Work on Trading Cards
| Fee | What You Pay |
|---|---|
| Final value fee with no eBay Store | 13.25% (14.97% with Ontario HST) |
| Final value fee with an eBay Store | 12.35% (13.96% with Ontario HST) |
| Per-order fee | C$0.30 up to C$10 and C$0.40 above before HST |
| Fee charged on | Card, postage and sales tax |
On a low-dollar card the per-order fee hurts more than the percentage. A C$1.00 card with no shipping charge loses about C$0.51 to eBay fees before postage. Selling several cards in one order spreads that fee, which is why the calculator takes a quantity.
Postage starts at C$2.61 an order and supplies at C$0.21, the starting numbers PowerList TCG uses for eBay Canada. Put in your own; nobody's shipping costs are the same.
A Worked Example on eBay Canada
| Line | 1 Card | 3 Cards |
|---|---|---|
| Cost Per Card | C$1.35 | C$1.35 |
| Total Sale | C$1.35 | C$4.05 |
| Shipping Charged to Buyer | C$2.61 | C$2.61 |
| Postage and Supplies | −C$2.82 | −C$2.82 |
| eBay Fees | −C$1.01 | −C$1.47 |
| Your Card Cost | −C$0.14 | −C$0.42 |
| You Keep | −C$0.01 | C$1.95 |
| Per Card | −C$0.01 | C$0.65 |
One C$1.35 card sells with C$2.61 shipping charged to the buyer, the same as the postage, and 13% sales tax on top. eBay takes 14.97% of C$4.47, which is C$0.67, plus the C$0.34 per-order fee: C$1.01 in fees. Take off C$2.61 postage, C$0.21 supplies and C$0.14 for the card, and the sale loses C$0.01.
Sell three of those cards to the same buyer and the picture changes. The shipping charge, the postage and the per-order fee each happen once. Fees come to C$1.47 and you keep C$1.95, or C$0.65 a card. Put your own numbers in the calculator above to see your version.
Ways to Keep More of Each Card Sale
- Get more cards into each order. The per-order fee and the postage are paid once per order, so a buyer who takes three cards costs you far less per card than three buyers who take one.
- Know your break-even price. The calculator shows the lowest price that still covers fees, postage and the card. Under it, a sale loses money however good it feels.
- Check whether an eBay Store pays for itself. A Store cuts the trading card rate from 14.97% to 13.96%. On C$1,000 of sales a month that is C$10.10 back; compare it with what the Store costs you.
- Compare your own store. Shopify, WooCommerce and Square charge card processing instead of a selling fee, from 2.8% to 2.9% at their standard online rates in Canada, against eBay's 14.97%. Your plan and payment method change the real rate. Compare All shows the same sale on each one; the trade-off is finding your own buyers.
eBay Fees on Trading Cards: Common Questions
Straight answers on eBay Canada fees for card sellers.
How much does eBay Canada charge to sell trading cards?
13.25% of the total sale without an eBay Store, 12.35% with one, on the card, the postage and the sales tax eBay collects. eBay then charges GST/HST/QST on its own fees by your province. The calculator starts with Ontario's 13% HST: 14.97%, or 13.96% with a Store. Change it under Marketplace Rates for another province.
Does eBay Canada take its fee from sales tax too?
Yes. eBay collects GST, HST, PST or QST from Canadian buyers and charges its fee on the total including it. The calculator starts at Ontario's 13%; the buyer's province decides the real rate, from 5% to 15%.
What is eBay Canada's per-order fee?
C$0.30 on orders of C$10 or less and C$0.40 above, plus tax on the fee: 0.34 and 0.45 with Ontario's HST. It is charged once per order however many cards are in it.
Should I use the eBay Store rate?
Only if you pay for an eBay Store. Trading cards then pay 12.35% instead of 13.25%, or 13.96% instead of 14.97% with Ontario's HST added, and Basic gives 11,000 free card listings a month instead of 250. Pick your level under eBay Store.
Does the Top Rated Seller discount lower eBay Canada fees?
Yes, by 10% of the final value fee on listings that qualify as Top Rated Plus. eBay Canada uses eBay US's rules for it, so the calculator takes it off the percentage fee only, never the per-order fee: 14.97% with Ontario's HST becomes about 13.48%. Tick Top Rated Seller Discount to see it.
How do Shopify, WooCommerce and Square compare?
They charge card processing, not a selling fee. The calculator starts with the standard rates in Canada: Shopify Payments 2.9% + C$0.30, WooPayments 2.9% + C$0.30 and Square 2.8% + C$0.30 online. Your plan or gateway may differ, so change them under Marketplace Rates. Compare All lines up the same sale on every one of them.
Does this include Promoted Listings?
No. If you pay for Promoted Listings, add your ad rate to the eBay fee percent under Marketplace Rates for a close estimate.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
How is this different from the Fee Calculator in PowerList TCG?
It is the same math. Inside PowerList TCG the Fee Calculator can fill in your real postage, shipping charge and card cost from your last 90 days of sales, and Analytics uses eBay's real fees on every order you sold.
