Two Hundred Listings, or One

The cards are the same either way. What changes is how a buyer finds them.

Someone building a set usually wants more than one card, and they would rather get them from one seller in one order. Spread across two hundred separate listings, they have to go find each one, and it gets tedious fast.

A variation listing puts the whole set on one page behind a dropdown. Every card keeps its own price and its own quantity. Nothing about your pricing changes. What changes is that a buyer picking six cards does it in one place.

Singles Only
  • Every card has its own page
  • A set buyer hunts for each one
  • Attention split across hundreds of pages
Good for singles. Harder for set builders.

How a Variation Listing Is Built

Four steps. After the first one, new cards join automatically.

1

Pick Your Sets

Choose which sets and conditions are worth a variation listing, and set a minimum if you only want it once you hold enough.

2

The Group Is Assembled

PowerList TCG pulls your in-stock cards for that set and condition, puts them in card number order, and splits them into parts if there are more than 250.

3

It Goes Live

One listing per set and condition, with every card as an option carrying its own price, quantity, and image.

4

It Grows as You Scan

Cards you stock later are added to the same live listing. Same item number, same history, new options in the dropdown.

What Happens When You Scan Twelve More

The part most sellers expect to be painful, because on eBay it usually is.

Before
Surging Sparks NM, 172 cards live
One listing, up for four months, with watchers on it.
You Scan
12 more cards from that set
A normal batch. Nothing about it is aimed at the variation listing.
What Happens
They join the listing that is already up
All twelve go on in a single update, not twelve separate ones.
After
Same listing, 184 cards
Same item number, same four months of history, same watchers. Twelve new options in the dropdown.

Things Worth Knowing

Behaviors that decide what your variation listings look like.

Sets Over 250 Cards Split

eBay currently allows 250 variations on one listing. A bigger set becomes numbered parts, each titled with the card range it covers. The split follows card number. Part one is the front of the set and part two picks up where it left off.

Conditions Never Mix

Near Mint and Lightly Played cards from one set are separate listings. They are different products at different prices, and putting them in one dropdown would make the cheaper grade look like the price of the set.

Choose When a Set Goes Live

Nine cards is not a set listing. Set a minimum, either a card count or a percentage of the set, and anything under it waits. The moment your stock crosses that line, PowerList TCG publishes the listing.

Turning a Set off Stops It Growing

Uncheck a set and its live listing stops absorbing newly stocked cards. The switch gets read on every pass, not just the first one, which means turning it off actually holds.

Your Own Cover Image

Upload a cover image for a set and condition and it fronts the listing. Otherwise a buyer scrolling your store sees a wall of identical card backs.

You Can Unwind It

Reversible, but not in place. Convert a variation back to singles and every card returns to the queue to be listed on its own. eBay has no in-place conversion, so the variation closes and each card comes back with a new item number. That is why you get asked to confirm.

Known Limits

Where variation listings stop and you take over.

  • 250 variations per listing is eBay's limit, not ours. Larger sets get split into parts. A part that would grow past the limit needs rebuilding instead of growing further.
  • eBay limits how often listing titles can change. The format your cards are named in can currently change once a month on a live listing. PowerList TCG holds you to that window and tells you the date it opens again. Descriptions can change any time.
  • Converting back to singles ends the listing. eBay has no in-place conversion. The variation closes, keeping its own sales history, and every card gets relisted individually under a new item number. A storefront version of the same group is taken down first, so a card can never be buyable in two places at once while it is being unwound.
  • Damaged and ungraded cards stay as singles. Variation listings cover the four graded conditions, Near Mint through Heavily Played. Anything outside those keeps its own listing.
  • Set the group up once, not once per marketplace. A set and condition marked as a variation is a variation everywhere. The card names, the order they appear in, your title, your description and your cover image are the same on eBay and on your storefront. Only the publishing differs, and each marketplace tracks its own.

Variation Listings: Common Questions

What is a variation listing?

One listing that holds many cards, where the buyer picks the card they want from a dropdown. Sellers call them Choose Your Card listings. Instead of two hundred separate listings for a set, you have one listing with two hundred options inside it.

Why would I want one listing instead of two hundred?

Someone building a set can take six cards off you in one order instead of hunting down six separate listings. Each option still keeps its own price and quantity. Six cards is six cards, not a bundle at one shared price. The listing also builds up its own watchers and history as one page instead of that attention being scattered across hundreds.

How are the listings split up?

One listing per set and condition to start. Near Mint cards from a set are one listing and Lightly Played cards from the same set are another, because they are not the same product and should not share a price. You can split a set further by rarity, by finish, or by both, and combine rows into one listing, so Common to Super Rare non-foils sit in one listing and the foils in another.

What happens when I scan more cards from a set that is already live?

They are added to the existing listing on their own. Same item number, same listing, same history, with the new cards appearing as extra options. You do not end anything and you do not start over.

What if a set has more than 250 cards?

eBay currently caps a listing at 250 variations. Bigger sets get split into numbered parts, each with its card range in the title. The split follows card number order, which keeps the parts readable to a buyer.

Do I have to do this for every set?

No. You choose which sets and conditions are worth it, and you can set a minimum so a set only goes live once you actually hold enough of it. A set sitting below your minimum waits, and publishes itself once you cross the line.

Can I go back to single listings?

Yes, and you have to actually mean it. The variation listing ends and every card in it goes back in the queue to be listed on its own. eBay gives you no way to convert a listing in place, which means the old one closes and each card comes back with a new item number.

Can I change how the cards are named in the dropdown?

Yes. eBay currently limits how often that format can change on a live listing to once a month. PowerList TCG holds you to the same window and tells you the date it opens again, instead of letting the change fail at eBay. You can edit descriptions any time.
